Jonathan Legear is a rising star in Belgium. The 25-year-old former Anderlecht winger is turning heads with his recent performances and is drawing comparisons to former Swedish international winger Christian Wilhelmsson, due to his natural pace and blonde locks. But recently, during a trip back to Belgium for the weekend from his new Russian club Terek Grozny, he was making headlines for all the wrong reasons. After a night out in the small town of Tongeren, with friends which included some drinking, Legear decided to stop at an Esso petrol station to fill up his Porsche at around 5.30am. Unfortunately Legear “confused” the brake pedal with the gas pedal and ended up crashing through the Esso store.
The Belgian internationalist, who won his first of two caps in late 2010, was arrested after causing an estimated €300,000 worth of damage to the store and received a two-week driving suspension. He is likely to face further charges for involuntary assault and intoxication. Luckily no-one was seriously injured in the store (only one person suffered minor injuries) to the relief of Legear. Ironically, this is not the first driving mistake that he has made. In 2009, Jonathan drove his BMW 5 series through a house causing significant damage and earning the player a total of 50 hours of community service. It appears as though Legear is making habit of this and perhaps should re-evaluate drinking and driving before he causes more damage or ends up facing more serious charges.
