With Christmas fast approaching and the January transfer window just around the corner, chairmen everywhere are getting jittery. We have already seen several pull the trigger on failing coaches with three – Fulham’s Martin Jol, Sheffield Wednesday’s Dave Jones and Wigan’s Owen Coyle all axed on what turned out to be a bloodbath day for managers yesterday. Many more will follow as the pressure intensifies with an action packed December. Whilst most months will see four or five games, clubs like Chelsea and Tottenham will play eight games in December in all competitions which is sure to stretch the playing staff to its fullest and test the manager’s nerves to the max. Before the end of the month, more coaches will fall, whilst others will be drawing up transfer wish lists in preparation for the second half of the campaign. Also this month, Roy Hodgson and his England squad will find out who lies in wait for them in Brazil next summer as the World Cup draw is made. England will be hoping to replicate past draws with an easy group but as the quality of international football improves, is there such a thing?
